Happy Earth Week! We’ve been thinking about all the ways we reuse and recycle in our everyday lives—at home and at work. When the Boho team isn’t sewing garments, we naturally gravitate toward vintage pieces and pre-loved or thrifted clothing. We love well made garments, wherever we can source them!

This idea fit perfectly with Earth Day awareness: recycle inspiration from hand-me-downs, closet archives, and consignment pieces. Preparing our displays and social media has been such fun—and seeing which ones spark ideas for new sewing projects among all our beautiful fabrics and patterns (many of them from the 1960s and 70s).
One standout was a Prada sheath dress from the Fall/Winter 2007–2008 runway collection (come see it for yourself on Earth Day in store!) Parts of this collection are actually on display at the Met in New York City. We were so interested in studying the fabric and craftsmanship up close. According to Vogue Runway, the wool ombré (or dégradé) fabrics were made with complex techniques, using different warp threads and varying tensions during the weaving process. It’s described as “a gradient blend of silk, wool, cotton, and linen with a subtle, textured finish.” This is the kind of dress that is a whole world of design in itself!

We’ll continue sharing inspiration from mod prints, eco-friendly fabrics, and interesting secondhand silhouettes throughout the week. It’s the perfect reminder that great style is rarely disposable.
It’s also amazing how a little tailoring makes a big difference in the longevity of your clothing. Textile waste is a huge challenge, and sometimes garments are discarded because they don’t fit well or aren’t made to last. A hem, adjusting a waistline, patching or mending with embroidery can really turn fast fashion into a staple piece.

But all sewists should give themselves a pat on the back - making your own clothing takes sustainability much further. Choosing fabrics and patterns intentionally (check out these zero waste patterns from our newest team member Janet!) and creating something beautiful that really fits your body and style is a wonderful way to express your creativity and reduce waste.
We truly hope some of these secondhand fashion inspirations we are posting @bohofabrics will spark your next make!
